The Electronics and Signal Processing Laboratory (ESPLAB) was founded in 1975 at the University of Neuchâtel and transferred at EPFL (in Neuchâtel) on January 1st 2009. ESPLAB, which counts today over 30 collaborators, has been working for more than 15 years in the field of ultra low-power digital, analog, and mixed analog-digital very large scale integration (VLSI) design for wearable microsystems (wireless and wired telecommunications, global/local positioning, sensor networks, instrumentation, multimedia, telemedicine, safety, security, consumer electronics, and now also bioengineering), providing the needed expertise in multi-criteria radio frequency andbaseband algorithm and architecture optimizations complying with real-time processing, very low-power consumption, and component miniaturization constraints, while guaranteeing the highest signal processing quality to the user.

These activities resulted in a large number of publications, in the realization of numerous prototypes and demonstrators for the experimental validation of concepts, in several patents, and in the creation of spin-offs. Today, the group is involved in national R&D projects (SNSF Swiss National Science Foundation, CTI Commission for Technology and Innovation), international cooperation in the frame of EU FP6/FP7 projects, COST Actions, ESA projects, regional programs with France, etc.
